PLEIN AIR PAINTING There is nothing I enjoy more on a beautiful day then to spend a few hours working on a painting outdoors. I have painted canvas from the Colorado Rockies to the Caribbean, Catskill Mountains of NY to the coast of New England. My plein air paintings have been exhibited in many solo, juried and group exhibitions. I also participate in plein air wet paint events and work with a group of plein air painters from Columbia County, NY, in the summer months.
NEW ENGLAND ROCK SERIES - TIDAL POOL SERIES - FLORIDA CLUSTERS To create these paintings, I would spend my free time working on site among the rocky tidal pools during the low tide. There I could find an array of colors, shapes and sizes of both living and organic objects to incorporate into my larger works. The New England Rock Series has been exhibited along with my plein air and nature illustrations of wildflowers and crab studies from the New England region in two solo exhibitions held at the Audubon Society of Bristol, RI, and at the Greenwich Audubon Society of Greenwich, CT.
LARGE LANDSCAPE PAINTING SERIES After graduating college with a BFA in Art & Design from the Pratt Institute, NY, I recieved a three month Artist-in-Residency Award from the Woodstock School of Art in Woodstock, NY. It was during this time that I began painting the large landscape series. Four of these canvases were displayed in the windows at Macy's Herald Sq., 34th St. NYC. The painting to the left, 'In Praise of All Things', was chosen for a 2 year installation at the American Embassy Residency in Sarajevo, Bosnia through the Art in Embassy Program, Washington, DC.
WARHORSE/WARRIOR SERIES III It was during the Kosovo War of 1999 that I began to paint the 'Warhorse/Warrior Series III'. My paintings tell an illustrated story of the wounded warrior coming home from battle in the Dark Ages and entering into the promise of the 21st Century. In each new painting, his journey continues along the path towards healing and spiritual growth through the personification of his warhorse." The Warhorse/Warrior Series III,was given a solo exhibition at the Open Space Gallery in the Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI. This series is available for exhibition and gallery representation.
BOTANICAL & NATURAL SCIENCE ILLUSTRATION I became inspired to paint botanicals while working for a company that hand painted designs on wooden products. At on point, I relocated to the Virgin Islands where I took up residency in an old gardener's cottage. It was here that I began to paint tropical flowering plants and trees during the heat of the afternoon. Many years later, I needed to improve my technical skills and decided to take a two year Natural Science Illustration Certificate program at the Rhode Island School of Art. My work was selected for two solo exhibitions at the New York Botanical Gardens, NY and juried select showings with: the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, NY; the Longwood Gardens, PA for exhibition on orchid illustrations; Poudre Valley Art League 33rd Exhibit, Colorado. Many of these illustrations have been combined in other exhibitions such as two separate solo shows called 'Water's Edge' at the Audubon Society of Bristol, RI and The Audubon Society of Greenwich, CT. A selection of my illustrations are now available in print at www.stilegalleryshop.com.
